You want a fast absorbing protein and carb (sugar), taken at a 2:1 ratio, carb: protein. The fastest carb is dextrose, the fastest protein is whey isolate.

hmm ok...where do you get dextrose? And why do I need carbs after workout...I thought the idea was to stay away from carbs unless for breakfast

you can order dextrose online, or if you have a homebrew shop in the area, they sell that and maltodextrin DIRT cheap...don't buy anything at a supplement store, too expensive...as far as why to take it, search this thread and you'll get PLENTY of info...

You definely want dextrose pre and/or past workout to go with your whey.
Unless you want the whey protein you use for muscle gain to be used as fuel instead.

Dextrose added to whey will increase protein synthesis. And the combination of them both will increase glycogen synthesis more than carbs alone. Normally you will want to stay away from high glycemic carbs, but not pwo. Dextrose pwo will increase insulin more than low glycemic carbs and therefore increase protein- as well as glycogen synthesis more than the LGI carbs.
