I go for protein/carbs as well. Meal sizes depends on how muc htime I have before I lift. Johan posted a thread with studies showing that consuming some amino acids with some glucose increases protein sythesis by something crazy like 400%. Try a search and check out the articles, interesting read.

Studies show 1gram of protein should be taken for every 3-4grams of carbohydrates Pre+Post workout.. This seems to work well for me.

Try a Cliff Bar. I used to eat them about an hour before doing exercises that were long in duration. Plus, they taste pretty good, too.

Chicken and Brown Rice
Steak and Yams
Turkey and Whole wheat pasta
Egg whites and oats
egg whties and grits
I mean come on.. think about a good protein source and then put it together with a good carb source.. pretty simple.

Fez,
I don't believe they sell grits in Canada at any of the major grocery outlets. I've looked everywhere it seems. I'm in the West, though, so I wouldn't be able to tell you about Loblaws, Dominion, or A&P as we don't have any chains over here.

a shake with milk and some fruit is what I always consume like 30 minutes pre workout. Acctualy the biggest carb serving of the day in my diet is in that one meal.
