Peanut Butter
I was just wondering if the peanut butter i have is ok to use....
Natural peanut butter am guessing is just 100% peanuts right? no?
The only stuff i can buy over here in the UK is this:
per 100g:
calories 592
protein 24g
fat 50.2g
saturated fat 9.0g
ingredients: peanuts, palm oil and sea salt.
Is this bad sh*t?

i just checked out my jar of natty pb and the serving size is 32 g.. knowing that, imo the peanut butter isn't bad, its just measured at a really high serving size (100 g) which would cause the fats to be tripled. so just stick to two tbsp's of the stuff and it'd be like the natural pb we have here

You didn't list the carbs or fibre, so I'll do it for you. It has 7g of carb and 2g of fibre for 2 tbs.

It is easy to make yourself- just throw peanut in a blender for a while and thats it. I have tasted the UK brands of PB and personally, I would make my own if I lived there. The jar stuff was okay but it didnt taste much like peanuts to me.
The advantage of making it yourself is that you do not need to add salt (unless you want it). You COULD add flax oil, but w/out it the PB is already very oily, as peanuts ARE mostly oil - hence the high fat content on the label - most of it is coming from the content of peanuts.
You will see a seperaration for the peanut and the oild very quickly. You can either stir it back in or pour it off.

this is a good post. Ive been wondering a bit about my pb cos I luv the stufff!!
The thing is, the calories and fat content dont bother me too much but, the one I get has hydrogenated oil in it which Ive always known was bad but thought itll be OK cos theres only a little amount in it. The other option available, is much more expensive, tastes horrible, and it has sugar in it. but no hydro.
I didnt know you could make your own pb either. So just the normal blender that I stick my protein powder in to make my shake, blast the peanuts in it and it will make PB ??? Can I add other nuts to it also ?
thanks

I think i might try making my own peanut butter now, but i'll have to buy a blender! Almond butter sounds good.

I buy both but I stick to the natural brands, the only thing they seem to add is salt. I think I may try making my own though, sometimes the natural brands are too salty.
Juicy - when you mention fructose and hydrogenated oil, that isn't the natural kind, is it? I've never seen that before...

Let me know how it comes out MatrixGuy. Since it is going to be great, contol yourself and try not to eat too much, because, by definition, nuts have a lot of calories.

Thinking about it, if you poured off the oil maybe you would lower the saturated fat, keeping the protien. I have never tried this - just thinking out loud.

saturated fat is solid at room temp so I dont think it would be sat fat that you would pour away there.
thanks beenie

just made it with mixed nuts. Not very nice. I added some olive oil too make it a little more runny too.
Oh yeah - I need a new blender now!! Broke this one!!!!!!
Just gonna try normal skinned peanuts next time. Whats best to use ? Dry roasted ? Plain skinned ? Redskins ?? Any other ?
thanks

The mixed nuts should have come out well and you should not have needed to add any oil. Make sure that you leave it on long enuough and u may need to turn the blender off and scrape the PB off the sides then turn it back on again a couple times to make it creamy. It should be a sticky mess getting it out of the blender. That will be the indicator that you have done it correctly.
If you keep the nuts in for 1 minute, u will get chopped nuts. After about 3 minutes it should be PB.

i just did this..mmm tatsed pretty good...dunno y they put all those additives in there my only advice would be: add some splenda or stevia!!! and use unsalted other than that it was perfect...

Yeah I removed the shells - they were all removed actually, I didnt do it.
