Am I wasting away by doing this?
Yesterday I wore my heart rate monitor while mountain biking. I ride 2 times a week but i do it as entertainment, not really for cardio.
Well, to my surprise, after 1 hour 26 minutes i looked at the results.
I averaged 159 BPM for the duration
burned 40% from fat
burned a total of 1256 kcals
im 29 years old
189 pounds
6'0"
15-20% BF
That is alot of kcals burnt. I never noticed how intense these rides were until i read the results. I have so much fun doing it, i guess it never seemed too intense.
A few questions based on these results...if you have time.
1.) Is this a really good way to burn hard earned lean mass? Not preferred...
2.) should i replace all 1256 kcals with food in ADDIDITION to my normal Cutting sticky style diet?
3.) Is this even accurate? Did i actually burn this many kcals? Is polar pretty accurate, cause i also use it to monitor my morning fasted cardio.
4.) Should i not do this anymore? will it burn up my lean mass? Does anyone else maintain their mass doing intense cardio they enjoy?
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am just concerned that this may not be the best idea...but I really enjoy riding and live in a city where it is a sin to not ride.Last edited by rssumme; 08-01-2005 at 02:44 PM.

Few points......yes it is most likely fairly accurate...Polar makes very good products, but it also depends on what info you put into it (sex, age, weight etc...). Just from looking at your results you are biking above you Max HR and for a long duration. I think if you want to continue to do these rides just make sure you provide nutritional support. A carb/pro shake before and after your bike ride and you should be fine.

Thanks Giantz!
When you say pro/carb, do you mean pro/ground oats or do you think this justifies dex?

I'd say either or....Do the Pro/Oats bout 2hr before and the pro/dex after.

I've been biking alot myself trying to lose some weight..I usually don't add any extra calories to make up for it. I feel like I eat enough as it is.
This week I just started biking @ 5am in the morning hoping to kick up the fat burning. I ride for about an hour. Its not real fun biking in the dark on city streets and sidewalks but ya gotta do what ya gotta do I guess. It beats trying to walk on a treadmill in the am.
