Cardio before or after a meal when I wake up?
I hear it's bad to do cardio after you wake up before Breakfast? Everyone I talk with says eat breakfast and wait two hours before any exercise. I see allot of people on this board wakes up and does cardio before they eat. What the story of doing cardio on a empty stomach??

maximum heart rate, you risk crossing the aerobic threshold, which will switch your body from utilizing primarily fats as energy to primarily glycogen. Fat need to be oxidized to be used, you need to do lower intensity cardio so you porvide you body with enough oxygen. Hence the meaning of Aerobic "with oxygen"

Many drink coffee or take an ECA 10-15 minutes before embarking upon the said cardio session. Perhaps this is something you'd want to adopt as well.

I make sure I take plenty of BCAA's before I run to protect the muscles. Try drinking 50 grams of whey before you run.

Your right!!!! it wasnt Johan lol but I read some of the responses and it sounds like Swole Cat and a bunch of others say that the only reason cardio when you wake up on an empty stomache wouldnt work is if you dont know how to eat the rest of the day..so take that into consideration I guess

Yeah, seriously, how many big bodybuilders do you ever see running?
None that I've viewed.

Coupled with the correct nutritional protocol, I recommend 45 minutes of cardio at 65-75% of one's max heart rate.

Bulking Too?

swole and others what do you think of walking for a longer time period but at a lower heart rate? Maby 1,5 hours of walking at a decent pace.
In sweden that is the comon way for bodyuilder to do cardio. Plain old walking outside. I like it alot better then beeing in a smelly gym on a boring cardio machine.
Even though I know fat oxidation reaches its peak at 65% vo2max....

I'd rather get it done and over with doing something that I know works. Going for double the time at a lower heartrate would bore the shit out of me, and I wouldn't be using fat for fuel which is my goal.

what substrate does the body prefer at a lower heart rate.

Still fat i believe but the problem will be that you won't be oxidizing much fat. Even if you extend your walk, I still this its best to operate at about 75% max heart rate for about 45min, you are then ensuring yourself the highest amount of FFA oxidation.

You know how hard it is to stay at 75% for 45 mins? Absolutely gruling. My resting heartrate is about 43....I havent missed a day of cardio in years (other than illness), and I'm prob. about 8-9% bf.......75% is crazy, as the 220-age formula is junk.
-
08-10-2005, 08:21 AM #33
yeah 75% sounds like pretty high intensity to me
i struggle to stay at 65%
-
08-10-2005, 08:22 AM #34
surely jogging would get you at around 75%,? i couldnt imagine it being that much more anyway
yet everyone advises against that

i cant see how you can get your heart rate up to 65% just by walking
well everyones different i suppose, but i go on the ski machine on level 11 at 60rpm and am still below 65%
if i go any faster i'll fall off
i dont trust those heart rate monitors though

quick- let's say you walk on an incline and the treadmill says your burn 400 cals in 40 minutes. Hypo speaking (I know they arent accurate), would walking for a longer period with less of an incline produce the same results as long as the same reading was 400 cals?

My guess would be that it would be impossible to tell the difference in fatloss betwen the two.
Plz dont bump up old threads when asking questions.
