Calculating your specific Target Heart Rate is a simple formula:

First, find your MAX heart rate by subracting your age from 220
    I.E.> 220- 24= 196 MAX HEART RATE

Now, for FAT burning, you want to maintain 65%-80% of your MAX h.r.
    I.E.> 196 x .65= 127, 196 x .8= 157

Your TARGET HEART RATE for fat burning should be between 127-157 BPM.

Remember, when performing cardio, it will take app. 20 minutes to deplete glycogen stores and start the fat-burning process.

This does not apply when performing cardio first thing in the A.M. on an empty stomach, as your blood-glucose levels are already depleted.

    .

Very good info, you hit it all right on the head. This is the exact reason why resistence training should be performed prior to cardio (Not including a warm up).

Some people who dont work out that much simply go to the gym to do cardio. If someone steps on the treadmill for 20-30 minutes they're arent going to do much more then simply burn whatever food they consumed within the past couple of hours. Thats why its important to train first then do the larger portion of you cardio after weights

Very nice, you gave the proper range, 65-80%. If one is given a specific number they try to hard to stick to it. That is if someone actually uses a HR monitor. THR rate is between 65% and 80% of MHR. Nice job Austex
