I use ON 2:1:1 right now and also have some Volu-gro that i'll use up after my contest......you want some sort of fast acting carb if you don't want to get a real supplement.....waxy maize starch or something similar.

some people use fruit like a banana or apple, but I hear this wazy maize stuff is suppose to make a big difference in how fast the carbs get absorbed

i personally use a mixture of whey isolate 40mg protien and 60-80 mg carbs from grape juice for a pwo shake. This is because both are fast acting and digest in the body fast for the nutrients your body is craving .

    some fruit, rice cakes, oats.....

    Are you cutting/bulking?

You don't necessarily HAVE to have a high GI carb pwo. In fact many are moving away from that idea, especially while cutting. I still have butt loads of Waxy Maize, so that is what I use and will continue to use until it runs out. By then it should be cut time again, and I will be giving low GI carbs a shot pwo.

Any good meal is much better than nothing. If the budget is type, just do what you can.

I'd go with ground up oats in the shake, as it is very affordable.

dextrose or maltodextrin. both mix well in a shake and are very cheap.

waxy maize is a joke. that being said. any carb source will work, honestly. i'm using skim milk cottage cheese and oats to supply me with my PWO carbs. but potatoes, rice, hell even wheat bread will do the trick PWO. don't over think that meal, concentrate on training and your TOTAL dietary picture.

I recently just started using dates because they are 103 on the GI scale.

definitely a good pwo meal. i regret i bought all this protein powder because as a person with blood O, i now follow a diet for my blood type and incorporating only the foods i am allowed (or that are highly beneficial) to eat, and whey is something i have to avoid. sweet potatoes are highly beneficial for me for a complex carb but for post workout, sweet potatoes are medium acting on the GI and i believe high GI carbs are needed but only for pwo. therefore, my pwo meal will be dates, egg whites and some fish oil caps and vit C capsule. need to decide what im going to do with all this powder.

sweet potato is definitely one of the best if not the best source of complex carbs. I have been looking into Quinoa which is also very low on the GI scale.
