    Question Sweet Taters raise Estrogen?

Someone in the gym told me that too many sweet taters will raise your estrogen levels? Myth of Fact?

I ask because I eat 24oz of Sweet taters a day..

All the talk about any foods raising estrogen is a whole lot of BS. Whole food that is, Im not talking about processed or modified crap.

Yams contain diosgenin, a plant substance that has a chemical structure similar to progesterone. In the laboratory, diosgenin can be converted to progesterone by using specific enzymes to carry out a series of specific chemical reactions. The transformation can only be performed in a lab — the same process does not occur in the human body. They also contain phytoestrogens which do mimic weak forms of estrogen ...its interesting though, eating foods that contain these phytoestrogens actually may decrease levels of circulating estrogen. So the answer IMO is MYTH.

    Question Timing insulin

uhhhhhhhhhhhh.. How much more effective is building muscle when you time your insulin spikes and regulate your blood sugars opposed to someone else who's diet doesn't regulate blood sugar 100%, .. I'm just wondering..

True, except that a lab at my old university has convincing evidence that phytoestrogens DO elevate estrogens, significantly. However, its still in the beneficial range. First, if your on gear then the concern is moot as your hormones are already altered. Second, most phytoestrogen studies are done on rodents in a WELL controlled environment, not an applied setting. I'd be surprised to see a phytoestrogen study in an applied journal, that isn't horribly conducted. Third, Sweet taters do not even contain a quarter of the phytoestrogens as green leafy veggies. I particularly do not think it is a myth per se, but I definitely do not think it has any pragmatic importance on your diet.

^^^ Good post. Most of the studies i base my opinion on re: phytoestrogens were conduced on females and effects re:estrogen levels. Appear to be medically supervised with appropriate study protocol followed...but who can say for sure. I sure agree that I def dont think it will hurt ...at all....

I have no 1st hand knowledge of this but i cant help but sonder/speculate if the milder phytoestrogens woulnt act much like a serm but on a milder scale...thats ALOT of speculation ...but very intriguing. Although that wouldnt result in lower total estrogen...just loweing of estrogen effects and may occur at sucha low level it wouldnt exhibit any measurable effectiveness at "blocking" estro rceptor ....just a curiosity ...sorry if i took thread ot
again IMO eat away when it comes to sweet potatos.
btw - this is where alot of the "soy /estrogen" speculation originated ...phytoestrogens...
