    Durability of mixed protein shake?

Trying to find a way to have a protein shake handy for postworkout, since I run to work right after. Wondering if I can mix some before I go in a thermos, to drink after.

It'd be sitting there for an hour or so... is that ok? Don't know how that would affect it? I thought I read somewhere that it wasn't good to mix protein shakes too long before you intend to drink em, but cant find any reference now.

One hour will be fine, I do this all the time. The problem is when you mix it oxygen and nitrogen are running rampet in it, that is a breeding ground for bacteria. Remember once you mix it it becomes FOOD not a powder. One hour won't do anything drastic to it, just keep it covered and cool.

Why don't you just put a pre-measured amount of powder in the thermos (or an old water bottle) and just add water from the fountain at the gym on your way out?

That is how I do it. I use a funnel to put the powder in an old water bottle, I made a mark on the bottle with a magic marker where to fill it to, and when I finish at the gym, on my way out I fill the bottle at the fountain.

Gets you a nice fresh shake every time. In my case I kind of have to do that as my shakes contain creatine, and creatine breaks down 20-40 minutes after water is added.

You know... I'm stupid and I don't know why I didn't think of that

I already fill up the water as I leave anyway... makes sense! Solves the problem of keeping it cool in summer too, without ice...
