Thoughts on meal frequency especially for gaining

I know most of us were led to believe we need 6 smaller meals every 2-3 hrs if we wanted to lose fat or gain muscle. Now it seems meal frequency has gone out the window. I just wanted to know your thoughts on less frequent meals and larger meals for those who want to gain. Instead of 6-7 have 4-5 larger meals. I hear some people say the more frequent meals cause your digestion system to be constantly working and the less frequent meals gives your digestion a rest. So for gaining 6-7 smaller meals every 2-3 hrs or 4-5 larger meals every 4-5 hrs.
