Maximum Protein Intake per Meal
Group,
Stats:
47yo
5' 10" 180lbs
Current bodyfat: 12% (Down from 19.2% 2/13)
I know I've asked this question, (well, kind of hijacked another thread a few months ago) but was doing some research and found confusing information...
I, personally, try to consume 25-35 grams of protein per meal each day. Being 180lbs currently, that equates to 1.2g per lb of current bodyweight. I try to get in more when I can. I have read and have been told that your body can handle up to 50 grams of protien per meal. *(edit: I will consume 50g of whey protein DURING my workout in the gym)
I was looking at the meal plan for the P90X program and they have listed the macros for each suggested meal. Some of the macros had protein amounts per serving up to 95 grams per meal. I have never followed thier diet nor program but it seems pretty solid for dropping bodyfat and adding lean body mass (if you use weights and not the bands)
So lets start a discussion about this. Am I correct that you could consume a maximum of 50 grams of protein per serving or can your body digest and utilize more

No need to consume protein during workout IMO your pre workout meal is still in your system.
I do 40-50g per meal

Thanks Gaspaco
I see. My reason for consuming whey protien during my workouts is because I get the majority of my protien intake through foods vs. protien shakes and realize that most sources of protien take hours to digest and get 'into your system' and whey is absorbed quickly.
Do you think it's something I should stop doing or keep doing?

I get between 20 to 30 grams per meal. My protein intake is lower than most tho. 1.2 grams per body weight seems high, no need to feed the fat. I'd go with LBM x 1.2

See when I do high protein, I sweat and feel like crap. I can maintain all day long. I can gain if I want to. My problem is cutting. I suck at it. It was so much easier when I wasn't working from home. I'd stay occupied and went for extended periods without eating. Now I'm 15 feet from the fridge. lol. I don't want to eat less, so I'm going to start a hardcore cardio routine next week.

Im a student, and im currently on summer holiday for 5 months, so I am at home most of the day. Meaning I dont have to prep food, I just cook as I go. This is a curse too though, because it is too tempting to deviate when the cupboards are full. I find it easier when I am not at home, I only have my prepped meals, once its gone, its gone.
Wish I were as lucky as your KelKel... If I so much as think about a cheat meal I gain 5lbs + Water...

Not much to elaborate on. Just increasing my time on the treadmill. Right now I'm down to only 30 minutes 3 times a week. My best shape was when I was doing 1 hour in the morning, then another 45 minutes at night post workout. Going back to that.
... and that ^ !~ PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR SOURCE CHECKS ~

I started a carb cycling diet yesterday. Trying to lose that last 3% of bodyfat to hit the magical 15% or less bf so I can try my first cycle. Of course now that we are moving I won't be able to cycle until early 2014 at best. Such is life...
As for how much protein per meal I have seen all kinds of numbers along with the research which proves their study as "correct". It does get kind of confusing when everyone is right. I guess all you can really do is see how your body responds to different diets. I've also read any additional protein your body can't utilize is simply excreted and not stored as body fat. Anyone know how true this is?

Austin, curious what IS your BUN/Creatnine ratios?, I probably hit the 250g protein mark on the daily. Mine got high and I got scared so I cut it back, was like 1.5/ gfr was 55.6. Dr. was having me do pee tests and all kinds of bloodwork because of my kidney function. I cant remember exactly what my bUN was. but I could find it if you needed it. So this suggests why? To much protein intake. I was always in fear of loosing LBM???
My carbs are prob excess of 400 easy, it is so easy to eat too many of them. Didn't know carbs effected BUN.

This was a VERY GOOD read! Now...to really challenge all of you in here, and after you have read this article, I have absorption issues due to short-bowel syndrome. I had UC for 5 years and then had to have my ENTIRE colon removed and a new, 'internal pouch' or "J-Pouch" created out of my small intestine. I have to supplement with prescription Iron and 50K iu of Vitamin D twice a week. (And yes I said 50K IU twice a week). My thyroid spun out of control and I am prescribed 10mcg of Cytomel (T3) and 225mcg of Synthroid ED. This is all monitored through my endocrinologist. He also monitors my HRT program and prescribes 200mg of Cyp per week. He, however, does not understand the importance of HCG in men, but that's for another time.
Even though the inside of me sounds like a train wreck, I look much better than I ever have.
Now...back to the article...I didn't understand the relationship of how protein was truly absorbed but feel like I understand it better now. It seems in my particular and unique situation, I am going to increase my protein intake when it comes to natural foods, but concentrating on fish as it seems to be what my body likes and I look leaner than ever.

^ Wow. Lucky you! I've been on 50k twice a week and 5k daily for a year and barely got to 40! I'm due for a test soon, experimenting with 300,000 iu right now.

As of today.
My creatinine this time was 1.4,
BUN was 17 mg/dl high range of normal. told me equal to that of someone in there 60's wtf?
Weigh in today was 205.2, and BP was 124/84
previous weight of 213.6 creatnine was 1.5 3 weeks ago. Blood pressure 147/90
previous weight of 217.6 creatnine was 1.6 6 weeks ago. Blood pressure 155/95
As I drop weight, my creatinine levels are getting closer to normal AND my blood pressure levels are returning to normal. I snapped a few pics in the mirror and I cant tell any difference in size of me at 205 or 220, only 2 loops in my belt buckle. I have been eating a lot cleaner the past 4 weeks, I think it may have something to do with it. I have absolutely lost no strength whatsoever in the gym except on the deadlift, I cant figure that one out.
Would you have any suggestions on what I need to do or keep doing? I'll add that I dropped creatine altogether except I picked it back up a week ago on training days. my docs say to not take any creatine and check me back in 3 months from today. whats your thoughts man?
