Suggested Jelly, Natural PB, and Protein Bars

With summer break -officially- starting today, I went to Kroger and tried to buy some more health-concious foods; ie sugar free jelly, natural peantubutter, a different protein bar ( damn power bars are 24 g protein, but 24 g sugar! )

I need some recomendations for brand names. I couldnt find any natural peanutbutter at Kroger, everything was big brand name crap with corn syrup.

I found Smuckers ( I think ) Sugar Free Strawberryjelly, but it was made with NutriSweet and I remembered reading on here that the artificial sweeteners are terrible for the body.

Protein bars I've been using Power Bar brand, but they have so much sugar in them ( hence the great taste ). The closest Ive come to equal amount of protein per size would be Protein Plus brand which offer 21 grams protien for 3 (I think) grams sugar; these are also twice as expensive as the power bars, at 2.21 each.

Im not sure where the nearest health food store is at, so I'll have to go looking.

More then anything, though, I need good tasting brands. I dont want to find the perfect carb/sugar/protein version and have it taste like crap.

Laura Scudders *sp makes a great natural pb. Whatever you buy, just make sure it says all natural. Look at the label, fat will be higher than regular pb but carbs and sugar will be lower. Don't worry though, it's good unsaturated.

As far as protein bars go, I think they are basically candy bars with protein. To get them to taste good, they add more sugar and carbs. Also, the protein isn't that great, lots of collagen and stuff. What are your goals? If you are just looking for a great tasting bar, get the U-Turn or Detour bar made by Designer Whey. Good shit. I use them as a a cheat snack, but that's me, i'm cutting right now and very strict. Hope this helps, REDROCK

    What are your goals?

Just a good protein bar for after workouts.. I want to keep the carbs/sugar down and the protein up for obvious reasons.

I couldn't find any health food stores in the mall =/ Not sure where else to look now.

Mental, try these out if you can find them; Strive bars by Biochem - Mixed berry and S'mores taste the best (IMO), Lean Body by Labrada - Banana Slpit, Texas Pecan Pie aren't bad, Pure Protein by Worldwide - S'mores, Blueberry ect.. and you could also check out ones by Myoplex. All of these are low in sugar and carbs. I shop around for mine (we have more health food stores than you can shake a stick at in FL) but most of the time I buy them off the web (You can get some real good deals sometimes). I buy new ones all the time and the ones I like I buy by the boxes. You'll have to do some taste testing and come up with the ones you like.

As for the PB, I'll have to go with Peter North (that duff man kills me dude) on his suggestion. Most of the time I just make my own at the house. Not hard at all if you have one of the blender thingys and at least you know exactly what's in it. Best of luck Bro. I do the extrem low carb deal (20 grams of carbs a day) so I know what you're going to go through. It's not all that bad and the rewards are more than worth it.

    Mistake..ya, Im sure

I went back up to Kroger today and found that Laura Smith or whatnot peanut butter.. I drained the oil and took a taste; holy shit is that stuff good.. It's been nearly 2 years since I had PB, but hot damn!

I also picked up Smucker's Sugar Free Strawberry Preserves; there's a little bit more 'fake' stuff in there then I'd like, but for no sugar, it tastses damn good as well..

Im thinking of running up to Sam's Club right now to see what they have for protein bars.. Wal Mart is right next door as well.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

Crazy Richard's Peanut Butter is great. No sugar or sodium! Eat a jar a week.

Try to stick to a low carb protein bar. THese are loaded with good protein, but have hidden calories in them (malitol, glycerol,), better known as sugar alcohols. This is not a bad thing. They are just hidden calories that have no real place in the fat, carb, or protein categories. Just make sure to keep track of the calories. Try to stick to protein bars where you see an "impact carb" label on the back. The impact carbs are the only thing that will have an effect on your blood sugar level (which causes the release of insulin , thus leading to an increase in fat stores), but these bars have hardly any insulin spiking effect. They might have an above normal saturated fat content, but they very well dont promote body fat gains(hence the story of the impact carbs). Even though you should try to stick to real food, here are a few good protein bar options-EAS Low Carb Bars, NitroTech Bars, Met-RX Protein Plus (not normal Met-RX Bars), and Designer Whey Protein Bars. They are all great options and have little effect on your blood sugar level, leading to some good protein to be put in your body.
PS-Detour and Next Bars whatever that shit is called, stay away from. 13g's of sugar and 12 g's of fat w five g's of saturated fat is not the best option for any type of meal replacement.

Don't drain the oil in the peanut butter. Stir it in really well and the put it in the fridge. I drained the oil out of mine once and the rest of it turned solid as a rock. It was a pain. Plus the oil in natural peanut butter is the good for you oil.

That is still a lot of extra fat... Which I dont burn off regularly enough.

But ya, when I drained my first jar, it was unspreadable. Just a big chunk.

I drained my 2nd one, but its still really smooth.
