It's fine to have only one meal before working out. Just try to have some protein in that meal and give it some time to settle before you start. Then make sure you can eat after you work out, or at least have a protein suppliment about half an hour after your workout.

I'd say it's the same. My recommendation would be to include some complex carbs and definitely some protein and give yourself some time before hitting the gym, so that you have some energy for your workout.
