    supplements vs real food

I eat 7 meals a day but many of those are shakes. I work 9-5 and just do not have the time to cook or eat that many meals. I'm wondering how my body would respond if I cut out all the supplements and ate real food for every meal. Calories are calories, but I suspect I'd grow faster. Opinions?

I'm all for it. IMO, nothing is better then real food. You'd probably grow a hell more and actually become "healthier". It would be a little tough to down all the food and you would probably 'crave' cheat foods less since your body is constantly digesting food, but that's a good thing. Unless you're bulking. But IMO, it's a good idea.

I agree with Ronny. When at all possible eat solid foods. I perfer to do this just for the simple fact that it fills my stomach and it stops the cravings while dieting.

    thanks fellas

I was reading through my "Shawn Ray's Way" booklet I got at his Musclecamp last summer and it got me thinking. He lists his bulk diet and it entails eating a large meal every 3 hours, 6 meals a day. He also adds in 2 high calorie protein shakes...1 in the am before breakfast and one right before bed. I was amazed at all the time he must spend cooking and eating! I doubt I could do this and work full time and train and have any free time! When I said large meals...I meant huge. Here's what his breakfast was...

    10 egg omelet (3 yokes)
    1/2 lb ground beef w/ onions/peppers
    1 large bowl oatmeal
    2 bananas
    2 slices wheat toast

3 hours later he was eating...
    2 New York Strip steaks
    2 large yams
    Mixed nuts

and every 3 hours more of the same...

I will post his full bulking diet when I get a chance.

I personally like to eat three or four times and I drink four meal replacements on top of that. If I don't have an appetite, I can still force myself to drink an 8oz supp. The thing I notice most about food is the temporary weight. I can eat 2Lbs of food in one sitting, so do that three times and I'm 6lbs heavier by the end of the day. If I can get the same calories without all of that weight in my gut, that's better. Plus, I could never eat eight - 2Lb meals.

In the long run though it is always better to eat real foods. Your body was more designed for it than MRP's. I agree with Ronny as well. If you would eat primarily real foods, there's no telling how much better results you'd get.

i know that when you eat real food the nutrients are better absorbed in your body as well. when you take a shake the liquid get digested at a quicker rate therefore some of the nutrients arent in your system long enough to be absorbed....what i would do is cook you meals two to three days ahead of time and put them in ziploc bags or gladware in your fridge and pack a cooler with food.

As long as I rotate real food to shake to real food to shake, etc, and I'm not eating shake after shake, I'm happy.

That's exactly how I've looked at it. This is how I've been eating the last 2 years but, I'd love to give Shawn Ray's bulk diet a spin, if I could handle eating that much!

I'll post this in another thread tonight when I get back from work. Don't have it in front of me right now. But, it's a ton of food. I'm eating 4,500 cals/day right now and I can't imagine the appetite one must have to consume his diet. It's pretty much stuffing yourself all day long with clean foods.

I hear ya... I made it up to about 4500 cals a day in Nov & Dec in 9 meals a day and this was my absolute limit... I was taking naps during the day, it was too much for my system to handle...

I try to limit liquid meals to post workout only, but that doesn't always happen.
