whey shake meals
Ok guys im back for another round of advice on the diet thing. Ive been reading alot of great info so heres another question for ya.
Since I am utimatly looking to lose weight, but I want to gain muscle at the same time, I know you guys said they dont really work together but I gotta give it my best shot this way. My question is I know I need the protein for muscle growth so to cut down on the days calories can I sub some whey shakes for meals? like only eat regular food three meals and have shakes for the other three? Is this logic correct or did I misunderstand?

well i try to get in as many solid food meals as possible. though sometimes when the money is tight i use shakes around three times a day..usually i cut down on the portion of solid food to save more for later and have a half serving of a shake just for that extra bit of protein. i suggest making sure you get in some healthy fats with it like flax oil or nuts so you can slow down the absorbtion. a shake by itself will go through you too fast and will be digested after an hour.

My take on all this....
1) It IS possible to gain lean mass while shedding fat...Yes you are in calorie deficet but if you are changing up you macros from say like your normal diet of 100-500-70 of Pro-Carb-Fat to a cut diet of like 300-125-75 of P-C-F . You have drastically increased your protein intake by two hundred and you in like 600 calorie deficit, good for like a lb a week after the initial water loss from cutting down on carbs...
2) I use shakes for several reasons...I like their convenience while at school. I use an old water bottle I have, fill it with powder and EFA oil plus water, and take it with me on the go...Come meal time I can bust it out and Im good to go...When Im home I try to use as many food meals as possible...Sometime Im lazy to go and defrost the chicken/turkey/meat so I just use a shake...I think meals are good for what Big said...They will you up a lot more then a shake will, a shake is like a glass of water to me. With food you can throw in boatloads of greens. They will decrease insulin sensitivity, give you some dietary fiber, give you some vitamins and minerals, and fill you the hell up with all their water weight. Plus with food you know its nutritional value for the most part, supplements can lie their tales off without our knowledge, e.g. Chef-Jay's Trioplex bar scandal....

If you can, alternate solid food w/shakes throughout the day if you are using shakes. Try to not have shakes back to back.
The muscle gain fat loss thing is possible, but requires you know a lot about yourself and how to manipulate periods of lipolysis and anabolism.

I wish I could figure this out too lol.... I am just doing what everyone told me to do diet wise but I am gaining muscle somehow while cutting?
I have gained about 10 pounds over the last 2 months of dieting and training and I am sure 9 out of the 10 pounds was muscle. I have no clue how it happened though... because honestly I am taking in maybe 2000-2300 calories a day at most. It doesn't make sense.... but then again before I started dieting I wasn't using Dextrose PWO or carbs in my PPWO meal either, plus it is just my genetics to be a big person. My arms and chest have doubled in size the last 2 months, and my Abs are starting to show big time when I flex them. Even when I just stand and breath hard they come out pretty good. Now if I could only drop that other 2% of body fat I want to lose and get the bottom ones to come out good lol

Dont need all the carbs...Its all mental...If you do 2 on, 1 off style training you will have plenty of carbs from post workout nutrition and thus energy to keep you going...I do 3 times a week workouts and Im good for the most part...Maybe on day 2 of not working out I might get lethargic for a bit around 2-3 but the energy picks up a bit after...
I prefer whole foods too but its a lot easier to shake out a whey shake then it is to defrost, cook, and get the right portion to fulfill your macro needs for the meal...Plus I like the taste of the shakes!!!

a shake with some nuts is something that'll keep you not hungry for like 2 hours if you make the shake a bit thick...also the nuts provide good fats and adds a nice portible solid type food to eat along with your drink.
