I always hear to wait 2 hours. That's probably about right if you're eating whole food, anything earlier than that and your body hasn't really had time to digest the food, and your meal will have no effect on your workout. Personally though, I take a protein shake about 30-45 mins prior to working out.

I personally go with 1 hour. Gives enough time for digestion and by the time I drive to the gym workout and then drive home it has been 2 hours. There for because of the hour before and the 2 hour workout it is now time for my 3 hour meal. I do my PWO shake and carbs and then another hour after that my PWO meal.

What if its something like 30 mins prior.

I was actually going to start a thread asking what are some good sources of pre work out meals.

I currently eat a peanut butter and syrup sandwhich. 1 tbsp of natty pb and 1 tsp of syrup. the syrup has no fat 23 g of carbs, and 22 sugars in 1/4 of a cup, so i dont think i getting in alot of it.

Any ideas on some good pre workout meals, for energy?

    LOL.....

For a "clean" syrup/candy/bread/cake free pre-workout choice, 1/2 cup or so (dependent on "you") of oats cooked w/water, with a protein shake made w/water as well is a good choice.

does drinking the protein shake with the oats make the protein slow digesting so that u would want to wait atleast 1-2 hours before hitting the iron?

It does allow the protein to digest slower, yes, just as if you were to utilize an EFA or natural peanut butter w/the protein.

Yeah, that's fine for pre-workout.......150 kcals from the oats, about 220 or so from the whey protein, looking at about 370 kcals, 24 grams of carbs or so (after subtracting fiber and adding the traces from protein powder) and about 45 grams of protein.
