At 6', 280lbs and a BMI of 40 I personally would lose some weight. After an initial weight loss you should be pretty motivated and be able to start putting on some lean mass, mass you can actually see, and that will motivate you even more. Seeing muscle grow is what keeps me going to the gym. And if you have too big of a pelt (fat layer) you may not notice it. Lots of cardio, high rep/low weight for your majority of weightlifting with a few days of high weight throughout the month. By the time you lose a lot of the fat the lean muscle you do have will have firmed up and you're on your way. Don't forget about your diet! EAT CLEAN!! my $.02

hey man, welcome to the AR Forums.

as a matter of preference, i prefer to lose weight before building muscle. for example lets say you build and build but with the fat over it, you will never really be able to tell. but if you slim and tone up, your mass/muscle will show more.

Dieting prior to bulking makes a lot of sense. When your diet is restricted, your body adjusts downward. When the calories are restored, it creates a slingshot effect that can be quite anabolic . JMO. Lots of good stuff in the diet forum. Good luck, bro.
