Report: CIA paints bleak Iraq picture
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- The situation in Iraq is unlikely to improve anytime soon, according to a classified cable and briefings from the Central Intelligence Agency, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
The assessments are more pessimistic than the Bush administration's portrayal of the situation to the public, government officials told the newspaper.
The classified cable -- sent last month by the CIA's station chief in Baghdad after the completion of a one-year tour of duty there -- painted a bleak picture of Iraq's politics, economics and security and reiterated briefings by Michael Kostiw, a senior CIA official, according to the Times.
The station chief cannot be identified because he is still working undercover, the Times added.
The cable, described as "unusually candid," cautioned that security in the country is likely to deteriorate unless the Iraqi government makes significant progress in asserting its authority and building up the economy, the paper said.
Spokesmen for the White House and the CIA told the Times that they could not discuss intelligence matters and classified documents.

The source must be Al Jazeera, it seems extremly biased!!!!! It has to be al jazeera, al jazeera always paints a bleak picture of the events in Iraq, everything in Iraq is picture perfect.

not suprising the zionists are never happy, its either a biased source like al jazeera, and even when it comes from reuters, they act like its a crazy theory created by the liberal rumor, because reuters is well know for publishing "rumors".
yes the zionists want americans to belive Iraq is going accoriding to plan, its picture perfect. thankfully there are true americans that see past the zionist propaganda.

CNN is very left and biased! One of the last networks to acknowledge that W had won the election also.
And as for Iraq we are there and bitching about it won't do any good. We have no choice other than to see it through and hope for the best.

things arent going as planned, the situation in Iraq is not good, once we figure that out, lets move on from there, and find a way to fix the situation. but zionists who dont really care about american troops will say everything is going fine, everything is going to plan.
mark my words, this mess has just started, and we need to fix this situation before it gets worse.

Nice try. CNN and the left wing media (which is most of the elite media centered in the US) paints Iraq as a lost cause. It certainly isn't a gauranteed success, especially now, but its also not without potential to be a great victory for the US. History will be the judge of what I'm talking about. If Iraq doesn't become a peaceful, and democratic (enough) nation, then it clearly has failed. If they do, then it will depend on how much we lost to establish Iraq as this free nation. Who knows, they could give us some discount oil........after all, thats really what we're there for, right guys?

Fox news is fair and ballanced in the sense that it ballances the entire media out(a little bit), but Fox news is pretty much more on the conservative side I think. Its nice to be able to go to liberal and conservative news to see what issues are blown out of proportion by each side. I stick to watching Fox though. I get tired of hearing all the garbage from the Leftist media and would rather hear like minded views on things.

RockSolid, Theyve called back servicemen from retirement? This something you have confirmed because I havnt heard of that (I work for military and would think that topic would have come up). I DO know that if you get out and havnt filled your inactive reserve time that you can be called back, and some of my friends that were Arabic linguists were called back, but the inactive reserves, for those who do not know, is part of your service when you sign for enlistment.

As for the article, it really isn't anything new. Those of us who have family or friends over there know it isn't as pretty as the picture they paint. But then again, it never is. It's all part of getting the people behind the effort. Things are nasty there now, and they will get worse before they get better. Regardless, we are there, and acting surprised that things aren't going that well doesn't help the troops.

Badgerman, why do you start these hotly debated posts every single day? You must tire yourself out debating with everyone. Don't you have any hobbies?

60 minutes did a story 2 days ago about retired service men and women being called up for duty, they even showed a 62 year old lady that was going to be shipped to iraq. it was pretty pathetic of how are government is lying about this war and its pretty ignorant for everyone believing it is picture perfect, it is far very far from perfect in iraq. it is all going down hill from here on out
