Thread: God's Name

Technically the word "Jehovah" doesn't exist. In Hebrew, the name of God
give to Moses in Exodus 3, which became known as His covenant name, is
Yahweh. I obviously can't write the Hebrew letters here. Maybe I can print
you a copy off my computer sometime. The Hebrew language does not include vowels in writing. So it would look like this - YHWH. This is called the tetragrammatron by most people.
In about the 1500's a group of Jewish scribes called the Masoretes who were
copying texts of the OT were concerned that Hebrew was becoming a dead
language and that no one knew how to pronounce it since there were no
written vowels. So they came up with a system of inserting vowels into the
text of consonants without disturbing the text. It is a practice
called "Pointing". This is why you will often see Hebrew with dots and
dashes under it.
So, the name of God, YHWH, became Yahweh. The only problem was that Jewish people considered the name of God so holy that they would never say it. They would say Edonai instead. So, the Masoretes had a dilema. On the one hand, they couldn't put the vowels for Yahweh each time it appeared because it was too holy to do so. But they could not change the consonants to Edonai because that would be messing with sacred scripture. So, what they chose to do was leave the consonants YHWH and put in the vowels for Edonai. This became Yehowah. It is important to understand that no Jewish person would ever look at this word in Hebrew and pronounce it Yehowah. They would always know what was going on and substitue Edonai for YHWH. Therefore, the name "Jehovah," as it has been transliterated, simply does not exist. It must be either Yahweh or Edonai.

God never gave out his name. Perhaps he has no name. A name is what other people call you, from your birth forward.
On the other hand, why does he get so uppity about taking his name in vain if he never told it to us?

Well actually Sapper, check this out from Exodus:
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
