Anti-U.S. protests growing in Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Police clashed with anti-U.S. demonstrators in two Afghan towns, killing at least three people on Thursday as protests spread over a report about Islam's holy book at the American jail in Guantanamo Bay.
The unrest came a day after riots in the eastern city of Jalalabad left four people dead -- the worst anti-American protests in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. (Full story)
While most of the protesters appeared to be students, officials have suggested that elements opposed to the country's U.S.-backed re-emergence were stirring the violence, which also has targeted the United Nations and American troops.
"It's the symbols of this change in Afghanistan that have been singled out," said Paul Barker, director of CARE International, one of the largest international relief groups in Afghanistan. "There are probably people around the country inciting this."
Police fired on hundreds of anti-U.S. demonstrators Thursday in the town of Khogyani to prevent them from departing toward Jalalabad, about 20 miles to the north, local police chief Maj. Gul Wali said.
Wali said three of the protesters died and one was injured. He claimed many at the gathering were armed.
However, Interior Ministry spokesman Latufallah Mashal said only two people died in Khogyani, while a third protester died in a separate clash with police in Wardak province, south of Kabul. The discrepancy couldn't immediately be reconciled.
In Kabul, more than 200 young men marched from a dormitory block near Kabul University chanting "Death to America!" and carrying banners including one stating: "Those who insult the Quran should be brought to justice."
At the entrance to the university, a man with a clipped beard and spectacles read a resolution calling on President Bush to apologize and opposing long-term U.S. military bases in Afghanistan.
About two dozen students clambered onto the roof of a nearby building and burned an American flag to applause and cries of "God is great!" from the crowd below. Dozens of police -- some armed with sticks, others with assault rifles -- looked on.
Ahmad Shah, a political sciences undergraduate, said the students decided to protest after hearing of the deaths in Jalalabad on Wednesday.
"America is our enemy and we don't want them in Afghanistan," Shah said as the students ended their protest and returned to classes later Thursday. "When they insult our holy book they have insulted us."
Police said 150 students staged a similar brief demonstration at another high school in the city, but reported no violence.
The source of anger was a brief report in the May 9 edition of Newsweek magazine that interrogators at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, placed Qurans on toilets in order to rattle suspects, and in at least one case "flushed a holy book down the toilet."
Many of the 520 inmates in Guantanamo are Pakistanis and Afghans captured after the September 11 attacks. Despite both governments' support of the U.S.-led war on terrorism, suspicion lingers in the conservative Muslim nations about the American military.
Growing urban unrest could pose another security challenge for the U.S.-backed Afghan government, which is already battling a reinvigorated Taliban insurgency. About 18,000 U.S. troops are in Afghanistan, fighting rebels and searching for Taliban and al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden.
Barker said a group of high school students also assailed the CARE office early Thursday morning in the neighboring Logar province, beating one staff member and destroying equipment. The office of another foreign relief group next door was set on fire, he said.
Protesters also broke the windows of the district mayor's office and that unidentified men had destroyed a nearby mobile phone mast during the night with rockets, Logar Gov. Amanullah Hamimi said.
Peaceful demonstrations have been reported in at least five other Afghan provinces.
At least one protest also occurred Thursday in northwestern Pakistan, but it passed off peacefully. Hard-line Islamic parties have called for demonstrations across the country on Friday.
The Pakistani government said at the weekend it was "deeply dismayed" over the Newsweek report, which Pentagon and White House officials said would be investigated.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who is on a visit to Europe and travels to Washington later this month to seek long-term American military and economic aid, has called repeatedly for all the Afghan prisoners to be sent home.

Islam at its core is very much a religion of peace, unfortunately most middle eastern "islamists" cannot read, so all they have is the brainwashing of Imams, and Mufti leaders who tell them to kill children, and blow up busses.
This will of course get them a room full of hairy pussy in heaven.

If I could get a fire permit, I'd burn a stack of Bibles and Korans in the parking lot of some grody XXX club, just for the heck of it.
Maybe I could convey the same point by shredding a few with a few pounds of sausage and ham? Just for the heck of it . . .

Islam is in a very poor position to enforce that justice, it must be noted.
The last time a major offensive was mounted (9/11) in the name of Islamic Justice, an entire country was forfeit by the group mounting it.
I would venture a guess that any such country, run by an Islamic Theocracy attempting to dole out similar justice would meet with a similar consequence.

WHAT would u feel like doing or do to a person who would piss on the bible or jesus (god forbid) face (in a picture or a statue) ?
if u ask me if someone violates the word of GOD infront of me , ill hate him for doing so but at the same time i wont kill him although bring ti to his attention not to do somethign such as that ...........
i know u may answer to the above question the same , but not all christians will back off , some will surely kick that persons ass or even kill him , this is a matter of love ( intellectual or non intellectual ) love for God and his word , intellectuals will be patient and maybe even pray for the idiot , maybe God will guide him to the right path , but some who are die hard extremists , hell that perosn has no prayer infront of them ............... so this is not limited to just muslims showing such extremisim this can be found in every religion , cause human nature is the most unpredictable factor .

Thousands of Muslims have staged protests around the world over the alleged desecration of the Quran at the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
Protests in Palestine, Egypt, Sudan, Pakistan and Indonesia followed demonstrations across much of Afghanistan in the past few days in which 14 people were killed and dozens injured after clashes with police.
Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria have registered displeasure at the alleged desecration.
The spreading anger comes after a report published by Newsweek magazine said that US interrogators at Guantanamo Bay desecrated copies of the Quran by leaving them in toilet cubicles and stuffing one down a lavatory.
Friday prayers protest
In Afghanistan, the protests have been the worst anti-US demonstrations since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.
On Friday, the Muslim day of prayer, protests entered a fourth day in Afghanistan, spreading to new cities across the conservative nation where American troops maintain a heavy presence.
"[Muslim Brotherhood]expresses its extreme anger, condemns and deplores this odious and humiliating act"
Muslim Brotherhood statement
Afghan troops shot dead three people as protesters tried to storm the governor's house in southern Ghazni province, bringing the number of people killed since Tuesday to 14, officials said.
The police chief of Ghazni was shot in the chest, and US forces airflited him to the capital, Kabul, for medical treatment, witnesses and doctors said. Eighteen other people were injured in the clashes.
Clashes with police
Three died when about 1000 people took to the streets near Faizabad, capital of the northeastern Afghan province of Badakshan. Twenty-two people, including three police officers, were injured, and protesters torched the offices of three foreign aid agencies, provincial officials said.
The army opened fire on 300 protesters in the southeastern city of Gardez, killing one and injuring at least three, doctors and officials said. Some protesters were carrying guns, according to the provincial security chief.
Protests broke out for a second day in Kabul, although witnesses said only about 50 people turned out.
Afghan officials have suggested that elements opposed to the US-backed effort to rebuild the w*****avaged country have coordinated the violence.
In Palestine, Aljazeera reported that about 2000 demonstrators from the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip held aloft copies of the Quran and Hamas flags as they marched through the streets after Friday prayers.
At the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, about 2000 demonstrators held aloft copies of the Qoran and Hamas flags as they marched through the streets in a protest organised by the Islamist group.
American and Israeli flags were burned during the demonstration after Friday prayers, while 400 mounted a similar protest in the West Bank city of Hebron.
Muslim groups incensed
Nizar Rayan, a Hamas political leader, said Palestinian demonstrators were outraged by "the profanation of the Quran by the enemies of God at Guantanamo, and by the Zionist enemies in the prison of occupation".
Egypt's Islamist opposition also condemned the reports and said Arab leaders should share the blame.
"The Muslim Brotherhood has been shaken by news of the desecration of the Quran by American interrogators at Guantanamo," the movement's leader Muhammad Mahdi Akif said on Aljazeera television.
The banned but tolerated group "expresses its extreme anger, firmly condemns and deplores this odious and humiliating act, and calls on the American government to publicly apologise".
Calling for the toughest punishment to be meted out on the perpetrators, the Brotherhood blamed regional weakness for the reported desecration.
"If it wasn't for Arabs' paralysis and impotence, these criminals would not have committed this act," the group said.
Other parts of the world
One-time US foe, Libya, condemned the "irresponsible and immoral acts", saying they would likely nourish "terrorism".
In Iraq, Sunni and Shia imams alike spoke out against the alleged desecration in their sermons.
"We condemn the desecrations of the Quran carried out by American soldiers at Guantanamo," said Shaikh Abd al-Zahra Suyaidi, a follower of Shia leader Moqtada al-Sadr.
Sunni cleric Shaikh Ahmad Abd al-Ghafur al-Samarrai said: "In Guantanamo, the Quran is torn up and thrown in toilets while Muslims don't lift a finger."
Saudi Arabia, a staunch US ally but guardian of Islam's holiest places, urged Washington to carry out a speedy investigation and punish those responsible.
"(Riyadh) calls on the competent authorities to implement a swift enquiry into the cases," a Foreign Ministry source said.
"If the cases turn out to be true, the Saudi government underlines the necessity of taking dissuasive measures ... against those responsible (for the desecration) to prevent its repetition and to respect Muslims' feelings around the world."
Influential Arab paper
An editorial in the London-based daily Al-Quds al-Arabi said that "the Arab world is totally submissive to the United States".
"Authorities, clerics and official media only react once they have the green light from Washington. From now on, the Arabs are like a corpse. They will not react, even if Makka is occupied," the editorial said.
The director of the London-based Islamic Observatory, a self-proclaimed defender of Muslim rights around the world, poured scorn on Arab leaders.
"Arab and Muslim rulers are apostates. Their people are scorned, frustrated and tied up," Yasir Sirri told reporters.
Meanwhile, Aljazeera's correspondent in Islamabad, Pakistan, reported that demonstrations were held after the afternoon prayer in major Pakistani cities.
Protesters set government buildings ablaze and called for the departure of US forces from Afghanistan.
"[This] act of sacrilege has shocked the people of every faith around the world"
Pakistan parliament statement
Hundreds of Pakistani Muslims burned US flags and effigies of President George Bush in the capital, Islamabad, Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi, its second city, Lahore, and a number of other major towns.
Demonstrators chanted "Death to America" while speakers at rallies called by an ******** of hardline religious parties demanded the US government punish those involved in the reported desecration of the Muslim holy book.
They were also demonstrating partly because of a controversial cartoon in the Washington Times newspaper that portrayed Pakistan as America's dog in the "war on terror" hunting down al-Qaida, Aljazeera reported.
The lower house of Pakistani parliament, in a unanimous resolution on Friday, condemned the "shameful act" of desecration and demanded an inquiry by the United States to bring the perpetrators to justice.
"The reported act of sacrilege has shocked the people of every faith all around the world," the resolution signed by both the treasury and the opposition members said.
The US has responded by promising an inquiry over the alleged abuses.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice used an appearance before a Senate committee on Thursday to make a special statement "directly to Muslims in America and throughout the world" on the reported incidents.
"Disrespect for the holy Quran is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, tolerated by the United States," she said.

Ghandi is a good example. All he wanted was to free India from British occupation, and have the Hindus and Muslims live together in harmony. And once his movement was successful in freeing India what happened? The Muslims war with the Hindus creating civil war. It was too much of a hurdle for Muslims to be able to coexist within the same country, so they create Pakistan. Does the Quran teaches hate? Look at muslim society, they take people who blow themselves up on school buses and make them heros. That is what Islamic society is, and it is that because of Islam and it's teachings. Or is it? Food for thought there. Seeing as how everything is an interpretation......I guess the question should be why they interpret it that way.
Muslims cant seem to get along with anybody, including themselves. Can you say being 'played like a pied piper'? Brainwashed Islamists seem to do anything in the name of their religion, when in reality they are just TOOLS, not knowing why they kill. They have abused Islamic beliefs to fit their own. Posting up stuff like this just shows how you are just like them, at least in thought. The best you can do is point out the flaws that exist in western countries, because God only knows you can't point out any positive things happening in Islamic countries. Islamic nations are the ones getting occupied. And in occupied countries, freedom fighters arise, some using tactics that are deplorable, but that is what happens, throughout history when a people are occupied by foreign forces.
Can Muslims get along with anyone? They can't even get along with themselves.

CAUSASIAN: Keep posting that weeeeeak BS, it really helps show your point of view. Thats not sarcasm, its very easy to see the type of beliefs you have.
So far it looks like the event never happened, Newsweek can't cite a source and so far there is nothing confirming that this event ever occured. I guess those people lost their lives in those protests for nothing then? Or was that stilll considered Jihad? This stuff confuses me, maybe you could explain it......

No, you are still under the impression that the Newsweek article (which is where the information came from ) is correct. Or you can't read, I'm not entirely sure of which. Your article does not say that it happened, or cite a source, it says the thing was being looked into. Just as does this one.
That the only person who put pages of a Quoran in the toliet was a detainee, and since its his Quroan, how is it the US's fault? The allegations were that soldiers/gaurds put the Quoran in the toliet and peed on it and such.......there is nothing close to that ever noted as occuring. Detainees have gotten mad when guards have touched Quorans, but thats about it.
Though there had been some released detainees who tried to sue the US about these things happening, there was no proof. Newsweek said they had proof that this stuff had actually happened, and it wasn;'t just the words of some very "trustworthy" ex-prisoners. The supposed source came from FBI emails, but the emails have never been found or even referenced, by Newsweek or the FBI. Read the above article for more info on that.
By all means, piss on a Bible. See what happens, the ACLU does it all the time (metaphorically speaking).
