$1.7 billion in tax money to Catholic charity
Catholics don't support their charity as much as the US government does.
According to the Nonprofit Times,
Catholic Charities USA had
$2,858,623,665 total revenue in 2004, of which
$1,756.936,942 ( 61% ) came from government support.
$ 472,718,632 ( 16% ) came from public support.
The rest came from investment income, program services, and "other revenue."
So much for the concept of "religous charity." Instead, let's hear it for
the bleeding-heart generosity of the American Taxpayer.

So it only looks like these christians are taking it upon themselves to do charitable work, when in fact, it's the government that's picking up most of the tab. And do they ever thank us taxpayers? Well, I've never heard 'em say "Thank you." But I have heard them take all the credit for what they do, representing themselves as "selfless christians doing the work of Jesus."

I have a real problem with the government at any level contributing money to these organizations, but the Catholic Church tends to grab one's attention easily due to the whole "government endorsment of religion" thing.
My tax money is for them to keep my drinking water clean, not to fritter away to charitable organizations that may not spend the money appropriately, or may not even have the same values that I do. The Catholic Church certainly fits both categories.
Lady Liberty would not approve.
