What your opinion on Turkeys application to join the E.U.

They have to show that they are willing to accept human rights and that they are willing to realize them throughout turkey and not just in major cities. If they do so, they are welcome (in several years...).
But if they go on with disappointing actions like this: "Turkey: Police Rampage Against International Women's Day" they should stay out.
Let's wait and see how they are going on.

Turkey has been Europes historic enemy for many years, and they almost invaded all of Europe, so bad feelings linger. And the fact that they are a Muslim country doesnt help.
They wont be accepted, the EU will keep making all sorts of excuses.

.. excuses? There are several important reasons (some have been already mentioned) why EU is sceptical, but these reasons are to be found in the present and not in history.
- turkey is still trying to chase away kurdish people by force of arms, that means they are conduct a kind of war in their country.
- turkey still tortures prisoners,
- Women's rights are often not accepted, especially in the boondocks
- they also refuse to recognise Cypus ...
It would be wonderful if turkey wouldt change these attitudes and if they could become a part of the EU. It could improve relationships between muslim and christian people ...

I think it would be great to have a muslim country in the union to show the world such a union can work. But they defenetly need to shape up first and I wouldnt want them in if they would become a economic burden.
I would look upon it as a risk of ALOT of poor turks emigrating into the rest of the union and with unemployement high already we dont need more unemployed people here.
