Militarily probably Alexander the Great or Napoleon. Both were unmatched commanders on the battlefield and expanded their empires greatly. Rome was probably one of the greatest empires having covered such a huge area and lasted such a long time.

In terms of empire I would say the British Empire, the Mongol Empire, and the Islamic Empire (Arab, Persian, Turk).
But the British subjgated people that are weak, in my opinion. So I would probably go with the Mongol Empire as the best and most powerful empire.
In terms of military leader and commander I would have to say Hannibal Barca. I adore this man, great strategist, and get zeal for his cause.

Hannibal Barca who's he?

03-05-2006, 10:37 PM #8Since he was a kid he was a sworn enemy of Rome. He hated Rome alot. And if you look at this battles against Rome, he basically destroyed them in every fight.

They are going to come out with a movie about him this year, staring Vin Diesel I believe.

The Roman Empire - by far.
I admire them because they developed superior military tactics, especially at the small-unit level. They emphasized training specifically on the enlisted legionaire level. They had professional standing armies. They were a Republic, and 'spread' democracy across europe.

as far as empires go, the Romans ruled most of the world for a long time, they projected their power long before technology made it easier to do so.
as for leaders Hannibal was a great military mind, an innovator who is studied by all serious students of war to this day and likely will be studied 100 years from now.
George Washington, led a somewhat rag tag army against a much bigger professional fighting force and whipped it's arse.(and he led from the front, had at least two horses shot out from under him in battle) Served as President and when his time was up he walked away, when the people would have gladly had him as King, considered by many to be one of the greatest gestures in the history of politics.
Sir Winston Churchill, because I'm from England!

Third reich.
Sinister ****s but got to admire what they pulled off.
Hitler for how he made germany rise from poverty to the worlds greatest military power and his generals for how they revolutionised warfare, not to mention Göebbels for his brilliant propaganda.
We all have to be gratefull for Hitler not beeing a brillitant military tactician but thinking he was one.

Germany's rise was remarkable, but in the end they didn't rule much for very long, so they weren't an Empire, except in the mind of Hitler.

Yes some credit is due to the 3rd reich. I guess people to tend to forget that all empires where some what "sinister". The mongols, ottomans, etc. Johan is right, the 3rd reich grew from poverty and in economic ruins to a military force of burden in a short period of time and that in very recent history has not been seen. That in Europe of all places

From what I have read it was more like early barbiturates or LSD-like compounds, but I don't know for sure.
You can read more about it here:

As for the topic of this thread, I'm not so fond in any of the alternatives, but I would pick the Roman Empire if I must.

Not sure how that term relates to Mongolia, the country with the highest IQ per capita.
Again, please explain!!!

The beatnicks were bohemian. You know Jack Kerouac and then whole beat generation. Today, "bohemian" is almost a bad word or insult.

03-09-2006, 03:02 PM #38Interesting. It seems plausible, it is not the first time China manipulates history, to favor them. Quaint politics. However I believe at one point Mongolia was a part of the chinese "empire".

03-09-2006, 03:43 PM #39I agree that Rome was the greatest empire for the same reasons as stated above. The british empire lasted a spec of time compared to it and the advances and governement type of the Romans are still with us today. From Scotland to mainland europe and Africa all the way to the middle east and tips of asia..Now that was an empire! too bad all good things must come to an end.

Roman Empire under Hadrian. Man had the foresight to build a wall (hadrians wall) to enclose the empire because it could no longer sustain expansion with the limited technology of the day. For the first time in history an emperor decided expansion was not in the best interest of the empire.
