    Exclamation Deadlifting tips

Im in real need of improving my deadlifting form, what do you guys recomend??

I do ordinary deadlifts, and when the weight get heavier I always move my ass upp first before I move anything else and therefor putting everything on my lower back, I get no push att all from my legs.

I have done sumo alot previously but I dont like it much, I never get a good grove and it feels unatural.

352 is like nothing, but I can hardly get 374 off the floor because of the above things.

Here are a few pointers that may help:

    1) Don't try and "lift" the weight, concentrate on driving your feet through the floor, so to speak.

    2) Arch your back by sticking your chest out like you are a hot female porn star about to do a scene in a classro.. Disregard the second part of this.

    3) Tighten your triceps and keep your arms totally straight.

    4) Concentrate on keeping your midsection tight, it may help to actually flex your abdominals during the motion.

    5) Arms should be perpendicular to the ground.

    6) ALWAYS look up during the lift (this helps assure #2)

That's all I can think of for now. More to come hopefully.

Well that sounds just like what I do. I always kick my ass out first. But really all you can focus on is keeping your head up, flat back and, get your butt down. Try this on your light days to get the form down.

I've always felt that this was important for squats and dead lifts. I never wear a belt (makes it easier to get the right for, otherwise you're toast) and I've found that my abs are more involved that my lower back. The lower back is made of tiny muscles that aren't meant to do lots of work.

Johan, watch that lower back of yours, it's too easy to injure.

Thanks Il take that advice. Im always very cautious when it comes to exercies that put lots of stress on the lower back.

    Señor,

If you deadlift conventional, perfectly straight back or arched back is disputed. I think it is not too crucial. As long as your lumbar curve is under control. The article by señor tate very good, by the way.

Do you have long legs or long torso? If long legs, conventional may be good idea, anecdotally, but the opposite if long torso. If long legs conventional, you do not use legs much cause they have poor mechanics. Conventional have much more back than legs comparison with sumo. More risk of back injury, but less risk of hamstring injury (like eddie coan).

Are you wearing a power belt or a belt that is wider in the back than in front? I find the even width power belt support better. And remember, INHALE! Big breath before lift.

    Buenos Suertes.

Hum have never realy thought about how long my legs are compered to my torse but hehe I guess they are avarage I use a power belt(equaly wide all around). I managed a 400 pin pull yesterday so I am pretty satisifed, I just have to get my ordinary deadlift upp to 400 to.

If conventional, pin pull is meaningful as lockout is common sticking point. I can pull 400 off pins all I want. As sumo, my problem is getting it off floor!

    Buenas suertes.

I saw Kamali do back on the Battle for the Olympia 2001, and he does half deads-only going about halfway down, then exploding all the way up. He was doing reps with seven plates on each side two weeks out from the show-ever since I saw this I've been doing half deads only. I can do way more weight and my lower back feels so much better, I've also made great improvements in overall thickness and back development. I'll never go back to full deadlifts-maybe you should give them a try.
