I noticed a lot of people step back before performing squats. I usually step forward because I find it easier to get in the groove. Is this necessarily a bad thing? If so, why?

I don't understand exactly what you mean. Does your squat rack/monolift allow you to step forward? If so, how do you re-rack the weight?
the rack allows me to move the pins around.
To re-rack the weight, I step backward. For some strange reason it seems more natural to me. Just wanted to know if I should force myself to step backward to start and forward to rack.
Do they force you to rack the weight in competition a certain way?
Hope that clears things up. :wg:
Yeah, in a competition you have no choice and you have to step backwards. That is unless your federation allows the use of a monolift where you don't have to move at all.
But I do suggest you get into the habit of stepping back. It'll soon feel completely natural and you won't even have to think about it.
yhea bros i just do the standerd one step back and squat
