L.I.F.E Research is going to be carrying Melanotan. Anyone with info regarding dosage, frequency etc.? And what about the boners? Onset? Duration?

'Internal sunscreen' is on its way

Sydney - Australian researchers said yesterday an "internal sunscreen" that protects against sunburn by boosting the skin's pigmentation had been successfully trialled on human and should be on the market within three years.

Sydney University dermatology professor Ross Barnetson said fair-skinned people who traditionally suffer the worst sunburn benefited most from the drug Melanotan, which stimulates production of the pigment melanin in the skin.

Barnetson said a trial involving 80 volunteers showed Melanotan reduced sun damage in fair-skinned people by 50 percent.

He said the findings represented a breakthrough in Australia, which has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

"We've got to recognise that pigment or melanin is immensely important for the protection of the skin from the sun," he said.

Professor Alan Cooper, head of Dermatology at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, said melanin acted as the skin's natural sunscreen.

"I think its reasonable that we can consider Melanotan to be an internal sunscreen," he said.

EpiTan, the company developing the drug, said its melanin-stimulating abilities meant it could be used as either a prescription-based sunscreen or a sunless tanning product. It estimates it will be available commercially in 2006.

EpiTan chief administrative offer Iain Kirkwood said Melanotan gave fair-skinned people the same protection against the sun's ultra-violent rays as olive-skinned people such as Italians and Greeks.

While EpiTan says it will help prevent skin cancer, it's commercial potential lies in its appeal to people who want to sunbathe without going lobster red.

"Tanning's just a fashion that began 60 years ago," he said.

"It's a lifestyle choice, like Viagra, people will choose to have it if they want a tan." - Sapa-AFP
