Flaxseed Oil is made up of unsaturated fats. I usually take large doses before bed in protein / whole milk shake (while bulking). In high doses I definitely think it helps increase your lifts...and is great for bulking by easily adding calories. Fats are not necessarily used for bodyfat remember...alot are used in the production of sterols and other essential substances in the body. Supposedly I think there is a link between monounsaturated fat and natural test production as well.

There is a good discussion about Flaxseed oil found here:

    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...eed+experiment

I recommend using barlean's brand flaxseed oil. I get the high lignan variety. Mixed in a chocolate protein shake with milk it has a nutty taste and is pretty **** good. Lignans in some studies are said to naturally prevent testosterone conversion to estrogen (not that I'd use it in place of an AI--but still pretty cool).

Good luck bro, happy reading and I hope I was as clear as possible. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

    Thanks Hooligan,
Where do I get it? Should you only take it before bed?

I've only really seen Barlean's (The good stuff IMO) at a natural health food store (think hippy-all natural-type grocery store). Supplement stores may carry other brands of flax but most of those other brands I found harder to digest (I'd get weird headaches and stomach aches taking large doses of them).

You don't necessarily have to take it before bed...you may find it easier on your digestive tract to take a large day time dose...rather than take a heavy flaxseed shake and have it sit in you while you're laying down falling asleep.

I think the theory behind taking it at night is that it slows down the digestion of the whey protein you added in as well...and supplies you with plenty of calories overnight so that you don't deplete muscle glycogen as quick and have less catabolism over the course of the night.

I recommend starting at like 1-2 tablespoons a day for a week or so...and if you want to go higher add an extra tablespoon every 2 days. Don't just start taking 6-7 tablespoons...it takes your gallbladder a while to adjust to get used to digesting all that fat at once. Once you build up to a 7-8 tablespoon dose I found it did amazing things for me in the weight room...not to mention all the other health benefits associated with unsaturated fats like cholesterol control and the extra fiber high lignan flax seed oil gives you...

    Good luck bro!

I wouldn't think it would hurt the absorption, but it may denature it.

they sell it at vitamin shoppe, its refrigerated. Its cheap too. (for those who dont know, Vitamin Shoppe is a store just like GNC but is is 10x the size and easily 40% cheaper).
BUT.... if they sold flax seed oil on allsportsnutrition (our great sponsor) im sure they would have the best brand for the best price

I buy the whole seed. That way you get the fiber to. You put it in a little coffe grinder for a few seconds and mix it in with your oatmeal. No bad taste.

Don't take in flax seed by itself. I did once and got the worse case of heart burn ever.

to get the benefits of flax oil omega 3's your body has to convert the omega 3 to EPA and DHA. The conversion rate is about 5% in flax... with fish oil there is plenty of EPA DHA present already. So fish Oil is acutally a better Idea IMO. Both wouldn't hurt though i would think.
