There are two types. One will raise your blood sugar slowly and the other will spike it, like we want. The homebrew store should know the difference. Dexatrin(sp?) is the slow acting kind.

I was actually told once that I should use the slow acting kind. So I bought what I normally do, laughed and walked out.

Dextrose(aka glucose) is a monosaccharide or simple sugar that is about 20% less sweet compared to cane sugar. It is derived entirely form corn, & contains no fructose or lactose.

Well I dont know what he is using it for. But I use it in my protein shake to get the proteins absorbed by the body quicker. If he's using it for something else, dunno about that

So then why does everyone say to use Dextrose? I am going for a 2:1 Carb/Protien ratio for PWO.

True but dextrose is higher glycemic and causes longer and higher insulin spikes than say fructose or sucrose. It's the highest glycemic natural sugar. You can use table sugar but why not use dextrose when it's so cheap?

...because you can buy a 5lb bag of table sugar for a buck....and IMO its just as effective.

That's what I'm trying to say, I have tried both when I have run out of dextrose I use cane sugar. IMO and professional bodybuilder's opinion dextrose is better if you have it and/or can get it. I mean youre not going to die if you use cane sugar, but dextrose is more effective

Lol Sweet! But can I just go by any corn sugar? How can I tell between the slow acting one and the one that causes an insulin spike?

Maltodextrin is a sweet, easily digested carbohydrate made from cornstarch. The starch is cooked, and then acid and/or enzymes (a process similar to that used by the body to digest carbohydrates) are used to break the starch into smaller chains (3-20 chains in maltodextrin). These chains are composed of several dextrose molecules held together by very weak hydrogen bonds. Dextrose is labeled a simple carbohydrate and Maltodextrin complex. Corn sugar =dextrose
