    Water Pills

Are water pills good to take all the time or just when cutting?

Diuretics are medications used in the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), kidney disease, heart failure and other conditions. They stimulate the kidney to produce more urine, flushing additional minerals (e.g., salt) and fluids from the body. The most common type used for heart-related problems are thiazide diuretics or a combination of thiazide and potassium-sparing diuretics. Other types are loop diuretics and osmotic diuretics. All except potassium sparring diuretics decrease levels of potassium in the body as well as sodium.

Spironolactone belongs to a group of medications known as the potassium-sparing diuretics. It acts in the kidney to remove excess water from the blood into the urine. Spironolactone blocks the actions of a hormone called aldosterone, which causes an increase in the removal of salts such as sodium from the blood. This removal of salts causes water to be drawn out of the blood and into the kidneys, where it is then excreted in the urine. Removing water from the blood causes a decrease in the volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels. This drop in fluid volume decreases the effort required by the heart to pump blood around the body.

Spironolactone does not increase the loss of potassium from the body in the urine, therefore there is less risk of developing low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalaemia). When it is used alone it has a weak effect, therefore it is often used in combination with other diuretics.
