Health Canada urges recall of some products containing ephedrine
OTTAWA (CP) -- Health Canada is calling on stores to take some products containing Ephedra or ephedrine off their shelves.

The government warns the products, which are commonly used as nasal decongestants or natural stimulants, can pose a serious risk to health.

Adverse effects include stroke, heart attacks, heart rate irregularities, seizures, psychoses and death.

Ephedra refers to a several related species of herbs and ephedrine is a chemical derivative.

The voluntary recall is aimed at products:

• With a dose unit of more than eight milligrams of ephedrine.
  
  
• That recommend a single dose greater than eight milligrams or more than 32 milligrams a day.
  
  
• That combine ephedrine and stimulants, such as caffeine.
  
  
• That claim to aid appetite suppression, promote weight loss, enhance metabolism, increase exercise tolerance, aid body-building, cause euphoria or other stimulative effects.

Products containing Ephedra which are marketed as traditional medicine will continue to be available, provided they do not exceed the doses outlined.

What a friggin crock!!! Just because some numbnuts with high BP or heart problems is to stupid to read a label (or chooses to ignore it) the Govt. decides ephedrine is a health risk...HELLO??!! What about cigarettes you sons of bitches??!! I'll bet if the Govt. was making $100 Million dollars in taxes from ehedrine...they wouldn't be pulling it! Fucking hypocrites...the health minister can kiss my fat ass!!!!

Its a voluntary recall, which means that until the government passes a law against it they can't force stores to stop carrying it. I went into a GNC that had Xenadrine and Hydroxycut in the window and asked them about it - they said it will be there for a long time unless they are forced to stop selling it.

Has anyone else noticed an immediate increase in the price of pure ephedrine yet??....I have. I was once paying $12 for a 100tab bottle now, where I usually get it from, its going for $30 a bottle!!! and thats just in a matter of 3 days
