weights, drugs, alcohol
ok i am an addict of all sorts. my problem is bodybuilding and powerlifting is a large part of my life, yet i still smoke, smoke pot, and drink constantly. i have heard so many things about the effects of alcohol and marijuana on the body, but i was curious as to exactly how detrimental drinking and smoking(tobacco/pot) is to the gains that lifting may produce. I am obviously aware of the effects on supplementation when i drink, so please no info on that.

Ah I know the feeling my friend, I gotta stop this business as well...
-protein synthesis is supposedely down after your night of drinking
-I even read your testosterone levels are slighltly diminshed but who knows
-most importantly, drinking f***s up your training, be it your halfass workout the next day (as I did today) or your laziness etc etc etc
-as for the actual muscle building process inside your body, I don't think it is severely affects (ie drinking night after a workout, although refer to the protein synthesis note)
-after drinking 12 beer and eating a whole pizza yo ass gets fat
-but it's not gonna make u shrink
-not sure on this one, I just do a lipper when I feel like it though
-stop! (ya right)
-I try and schedule my workouts around my partying habits
If I missed anything please add!

exacly.. bro you have to see what do you value more... partying or training.. and remember fitness is not a 2 hour a day thing its a life style.. your not going to party with you boys when your fforty (unless your da bull which then its perfectly normal ) and if you pick up fitness your not going to be one of them over weight people who cant play football with thier kids cause he cant run 20 yards with out having and asthma attack.. i used to love going out but then i just go cought up in lifting weights and studing and there went my party life.. just my two cent take it for what its worth..

You guys are right, I always just assume marriage and kids will calm me down one day...
It's all proportional to your goals - I'm trying to get focused now and will try and limit the boozing. Lol, I just remembered when I got home from the bar the other day I ate a lean burger w/a protein shake. Subconscious at work. On the flip side it could be worse, I could just be a lazy fat slob who doesn't even workout.

All depends on the individual, some people don't want weightlifting to run there lives, but still want some decent shape. On the other hand though, you can't expect a whole lot if your mixing partying and lifting together. I stradled the line of doing this for 2 years, I always figured I was one of those people that could get away with it. I would still eat all my meals as scheduled, drink my water with beers, get in proper amount of protein, thought I had it all figured out till I realized that I wanted more, and the choice came of what's more important, and the difference was night and day IMO.

I hear that problem, but ive found lifting to be important to after paying the price of loosing weight before. now I always eat enough calories and workout before i want to get wasted,

I am 25 years old now I spent the last 10 years of my life partying and trying to maintain the balancing act of staying in shape and partying. I bartended for the last 4 years so you could imagine the craziness. Ive tried almost any drug you can think of, but at the end of the day it is never really worth it. For now I try not tobe an extremest, I try to chill with the going out for about a month or two when I want to make my gains. Then I party alittle when I just want to maintain. No more hardcore stuff, rather go out have a few beers get laid and wake up feeling good.

Since we're on the topic.... would taking Glutamine after drinking be beneficial (for anti-catabolism)?

I used to be very strict on my diet and training during the week and then party on the weekends and have had decent results but I realized that I'm not gonna meet my goals if I keep that up so I quit drinking. I havent had a drink in over a month and now I can't even imagine having one. It seems like if I were to get drunk one night it would be wasting a whole week of dieting and training. It's all about setting your priorities.

i only skimmed this post so if this was stated i apologize, but you should know that alcohol in the body has no other way to be stored than as pure fat. if you are putting too much alcohol in your system at once and it becomes saturated (which is usually the case when partying, binge drinking = 4 or more drinks per hour) the excess alcohol that the liver doesnt process gets stored as fat. not a real great thing....lately i have been avoiding partying due to this info. but every once in a while isnt gonna kill ya.

You are so right bro! Ive partied my brains out my whole high school, colleger life.As i got older i started working out but with the lifestyle of partying i had very little gains. I made a new year's resolution to quit smoking, quit pot, quit drugs and MINIMIZE my alcohol. I do admit its quite hard but not as difficult as I thought it would be. I guess this is so because i partied so much that my body is welcoming the new change. And Honestly i was kinda getting sick of partying. You cant do it forever!
Now i feel healthier and am more focused with my diet and health. and am getting more gains that before. I still go out and drink with my buddies, only diff is i stop when i have a nice medium buzz,i no longer drink drink to get wasted. So far so good.

Spoon that is the key to having fun...you can definitely go out get a good buzz on have some fun, just not over do it. who ever said you cant do that is just full of it. i would only totally quit drinking if i was contest dieting (starting may) other than that why not have a few drinks on a cheat night.
i also grew tired of partying after doing it all through highschool and most of college. now that i am looking for a career i know that my weekends cannot start on thursday. i also quit smoking weed cuz you never know which companies will drug test you. i do miss the occasional blunt, but my life is much more important. besides who wants to wake up all hung over and bloated...moderation is key for partying and it is still something we as dieters and bodybuilders can do without hindering progress too much.

Its simple. You're only gonna get out of bodybuilding/powerlifting whatever you put in. If you're not gonna devote your lifestyle 100% to it then you're not gonna get a 100% back from it. Alcohol does have an anti-catabolic effect on the body and like it was said before it ****s up your workouts for a couple of days. It also has a diuretic effect which contributes a lot to the ****ty ass workouts. I've done then partying thing and working out and now i quit all that **** for about a year, and in that time i have had my best results. I still had results when i was partying and stuff but I am getting a hell of a lot more now. Whatever you put into it is what you get out of it.

Parying is what kills me the most. I lift and diet great throughout the week, but once the weekend hits, the drinking begins. I can't help but drink, I'm still in college. I wish I could see what i would look like if i didn't party, but i'm still young (and maintain around 9% bf). I figure i will for sure cut down almost completely once i hit grad school, so i can have fun for now. Until then, party on.

DNO i would say that you are doing the best you can....enjoy your college life, you have a long time to settle down and go 110%. now i basically stopped heavy partying and go out once in a blue moon. i agree that this is a lifestyle that needs a ****t load of attention, but what the hell you gotta have some fun now and then...just try to keep it to one nite per week and you're still better than many others out there.
