I have always made good progress with a journal. Keeping track of things like load, sets, reps, time, how you felt, your form and such help you to plan progressively for the next workout... even in small increments. It's deffinitly good to have a good battle plan if you want to squeeze every last bit of growth out of a training cycle. Especially good if you workout solo - without the back up memory of a training partner. But if you forget percisely (down to how long it took you to finish the last workout) what you did last time... how you suppose to add a little more?

I actually keep mine in Excel and then I print my latest before my workout and make notes on it, then after my workout I update my Excel workbook with any progress and add notes.

Excel is the best, I put all my clients programs on excel. Just program it for the percentage that i want them to train for each set and it does all the math for me.

Has anyone seen the Charles Staley (Las Vegas Strength Coach) Training-Nurtition Manager? His site is MyoDynamics.com... I am thinking about downloading it. I think it is best to have something IN the gym to accurately record variables - but I am betting his software would be an awesome may to interpret things...

"Charles Staley is a sports performance specialist and director of Integrated Sport Solutions in Las Vegas, Nevada. A former martial arts competitor and trainer, Staley is also an Olympic weightlifting coach, as well as a master's level track and field competitor (discus event). He has coached elite athletes from many sports, including martial arts, luge, boxing, track & field, bobsled, football, Olympic weightlifting, and bodybuilding. Staley has written hundreds of published articles, and has lectured extensively on the topics of human performance and sport training" .: Me

Here are some screen shots and info on it... it cost 63.97 (instant download)... apparently it took a lot of software developers to design it: Training-Nurtition Manager

A journal keeps my workouts intense. Even if I can just get one more rep than last time, I know that I am making progress. Unfortunately, my memory does not last for a long time, so the journal is my backup.
