    5 mins too much???

    i rest 4-5 mins between heavy sets:sets of 2-3 reps max.
    is that too much rest??

    No, that's pretty average when going for heavy maxs.

    Thats ok I guess. Lately ive been resting based on my heartrate. if its beating normally, ill start the next set. if im out of breath ill usually wait alittle longer

    Agree totally. I lift when I back at about homeostatis. If you don't wait long enough, it is a waste of time 'cause your reps or weight will fall off too quickly.

    If I am still sweating, I haven't waited too long.

    I determine my rest periods based on my heart rate as well.

    As for rest periods between sets, I would say 5 mins is too much unless you are working in a 2-4 rep range or attempting a max single. If you find you need 5 mins to get a target number of reps at a given weight I would slowly work the rest period downward until you can do the same set/rep scheme with a 3 to 3.5 minute rest interval.
