ice or heat after a workout?

If I have a shoulder problem, would it be better to ice it or heat it after training?

Or both? But which way "ice than heat or heat than ice" and for how long?

What I plan on doing BEFORE my workout is use the heating pad on my shoulder for 20 minutes.

AFTER my workout I will ice my shoulder down for 20 minutes.
