Overtraining is complicated much more than people realize. Two guys doing the exact routines working together excessively one will be overtraining & the other not. Metabolism is different so each must decide what is working & when overtraining. This takes experimentation & time. Useing the INSTICTIVE PRINCIPLE ( each person learns his/her body and tell if that program is working or not) can deter overtraining. There are many signs of overtraining not just in ones muscles. They are: 1. more aches/injuries 2.higher resting pulse rate at waking up 3.interest in both training & hobbies 4.insomnia 5.loss of muscle size 6.headaches 7.no energy/tired 8. loss of libido 9.eating less 10. boredom 11. depression. Overtraining produces less muscular performance due to incomplete recovery. Plateauing sometimes can be related too, when some say they hit a plateau in reality they are in beginning stages of overtraining. Cures for overtraining include time off, less weight/reps/volume/intensity, routine, diet, more sleep, increasing water intake, duration of workout, increasing carbohydrates and finally personal relationships and stresses of life. As far as distinguishing from plateau or overtraining both stop muscle size ,measurements do not change but the main difference is you can maintain strength,tone/definition in plateau's but overtraining results in less strength. For example one week you do a 1RM bench of 275lbs and 10 reps of 200lbs the following week(or two) you cannot do the 1RM at 275lbs nor the reps. That SOMETIMES can tell when overtraining...

YES it is. But better nutrition can help offset.
