NO I don't think you will as the whole purpose is the squeeze & rotating the scapular. YES you should get a nice stretch and help with grip strength if you only go down. Why not use a spotter to assist you going up? Sooner or later you will be able to do it alone. Otherwise, I think your time can be better spent on exercises you can do.

Do assisted pull-ups, then gradually decrease the weight you use until you are able to do your own bodyweight.

the campus gym does not have the assisted pull up station. I guess i could find somone to help me do the chins.

what would be the best way to have some one assist me, at the ankles?

cross your legs at the ankles and bend your knees,
then have someone put their arm uner your shin/ankle and
push up(straighten your legs) as you need assistance.
that's how i do it.......... IF, for some reason, I need help

even if i do just negatives, it will not help me to eventually do normal sets and then weighted sets?

pull as hi as you can, for as many as you can. it will come to you .

also do alot of hi rep wide, i mean as wide as the bar lets you go
pulldowns control all the negs....also try close grip chinup they

will help you build strength, and the static work wondera also...
