what exactly is this exercise used for? i would think it helps improve grip strength and forearms. i lift in a very small gym and i dont have much room to walk with the weight, what else could i do?

It is specific to an event often performed in the World's Strongest Man Contest. There isn't a need to do them, unless you plan on competing.

Agreed...I would work heavy back and if you have small forearms, throw in some solid wrist curls after bis to bring them out. The strength in that specific event comes from these types of excersizes.
