This will be very subjective and you wont get a definitive answer as some need more then others. I need about 9 to run at 100% but on 8 hours i can still function fine. I know other people who feel groggy if they sleep longer then 7 hours.

They did a test in some university on the effects of sleep. They kept some test subjects up as long as they could and the effects were as you of course know. Lack of concentration, weakness, groggy, mood swings. BUT after 1 night sleep they were back to normal.

I think humans started sleeping when it turned dark because we could not function in the wild when it was dark it was to dangerous so we stayed idol. However no one really knows what sleep is for. The right ammount of sleep is all mental and from person to person.

Normally, if you have no trouble sleeping, you should wake up the first time you open your eyes in the morning. This is when your body tells you it had enough sleep, has fully recovered and is ready to go for another day. Sleeping past that point is usually counter productive.

For most people, it is between 7 to 9 hours.

Try it for a couple of weeks. Wake up as soon as you open your eyes the first time, you'll see you have way more energy to go through your days.

I'll try to dig up some articles explaining the science behind that.
