close grip barbell upright rows ???

this has been a great excercise for me to realy help build up the traps. I am currently lifting about 115-135 when i do this excercise. When I bring the barbell past my chest and close to my chin I experience a sharp pain in both wrists. Its a pain like ive never felt. I have a few large veins in my wrists and i feel that this is were the pain is coming from. is this possible?

i have curently reduced weight used on this exercixe to about 95 lbs becuase of this

    ts

I avoid that by leaning over just slightly. It means my wrists are always directly below the elbows and don't flex. Even though you aren't meant to do it like that because it can impinge the rotator cuff tendons, for me it doesn't. Also it hits the medial head even better and besides with normal upright rows my shoulders really hurt.

You could always just do them wide grip.

It will be pretty much the same. The wider the grip, the less the arms are used and the more you get medial delt. You only need one or two inches wider for each hand to stop your wrists hurting. Experiment.
