You don't have to be a competition pro to have great six packs. Yes mass building helps when on steroids and growth hormones. Basically pros achieve their six packs by performing a variety of weighted/unweighted crunches, decline crunches, side crunches, hanging leg raises, lying leg raises, stability ball crunches and upside down hanging crunches. All these types of things are good, but not all are necesary. Diet is also very important to keep a low bodyfat %, and pros on-stage are dehydrated and heavily tanned with products to give extra definition. The abs are only small muscles and as such they grow slowly. They grow best for mass at around 20 reps, but you can do as many reps as you want when you do them unweighted.

If you were looking for a pro to answer, not many come by these parts. They have their workout routines in check, which is the reason why they are competition pros.

Those dudes hang out on the anabolic forums and the Q & A forum on competitive bodybuilding.
