Interval cardio - does it work for you?

Ok folks, I need your expert opinions on this one.

I've talked to a trainer and she's suggested that I try HIIT (high intensity interval training) instead of long cardio sessions. My goal is to cut while keeping as much lean muscle as possible, and she says that intervals will do that better than regular cardio.

    Here's what she suggested:

Jogging for 30 seconds, followed by...
    Sprinting for 30 seconds

Repeat the cycle for 6 minutes the first week, and increase by one minute per week until a maximum of 10 minutes.

    Sessions per week: 3-4

    Whaddaya'll think?

    HIIT kicks ass

HIIT it up my friend. you can definitely do it in 30 sec intervals either that or do 200 meters and 400m ones. obviously the 30 second thing will be around 200m but for the quater miles you'll need more active recovery time.good stuff

Use to do interval training. I thought I got great results from it then I switched to just long session cardio and got the exact same results. I still do long session and am happy with it.

yeah i'd do 300 or 400 repeats like 80% then walk a lap, this works great, i'd do one long run a week though 45min plus

I've used this kind of approach while getting ready for training camp and it worked great, but I also included alot of other drills, mostly cone drills along with the other running, and I'd agree with skiboy with having one long run a week...my long run was only about 3.5-4 km's....the thing that worked the best for me actually was running stairs...my legs were absolutely shot after a 45 min session of running stairs and I wanted to have a heart attack, and if you have a partner, resistance runs were awesome as well....

    YEP...

Do a search for my pic under Members Pictures...that's the result of knowing what, when and how much to eat along with INTERVAL TRAINING.

    Good Luck...Knowledge is the key!
