i experience an odd pain in one shoulder when benching. It helps a bit if I do one or two heavy shoulder exercises first, but still not foolproof. Because of this, I've decided that flat bench is too risky for me because the shoulder goes out at any time; I've switched to heavy dumbells because of it.

First and foremost, check your form .... it could be the smallest thing that has just been compounding and now has turned into this pain ....

second, try a smith machine for doing your bench

thirdly .. have someone check your shoulder, you could have a slight tear, or stretched something ... if this is the case, continually excercising it is only hurting it more

just did my shoulder routine today and its over
it was grueling once it started hurting i switched up to light weights
and finished my routine, couldnt complete a regular workout
during my workouts its mostly prymiding the weight up
i noticed if i warmed up with very light weights for my 6rep max i could perform the move with slightly lessened pain, but when i mean warmed up it was prolly ten or or more mintues just for one exercise which was the military press.
by then i was almost fatigued
am i onto something with warming up for a long duration
this pain has never occured before just hit me 3weeks ago

and if it was a tear what can i do about it??

I'd go have a doctor check it out...
Once your shoulder fucks up, shoulders incorporate in basically every upper body lift...

yes, I'd get it checked to be on the safe side ...

and your warm-up "theory" .... well think about it, you need to warm up according to what you are going to be doing ....

If you're going to be doing 3 x 4 at 85-90% for your working sets, then doing a couple of warm-up sets of 10-12 at 50-60% won't be very useful ...

you could just be over-exherting the joint/tendons/ligaments by not warming up properly
