I use the smith machine only because I can more easily change the "emphasis" .... (more shoulder, or more back)

you are talking about a standing smith machine right ? (you can do squats on them correct ?)
if so, then I do military presses on this machine .... take your normal stance (which targets the shoulders more) and then move forward just a little bit .... on the down motion, squeeze your shoulder blades together ( a la lat pulldown ) and tell me if you feel a difference .... I sure as hell do

I do them free weight with barbell standing.
But I prefer dumbbell presses over military presses.

I do it like this: For 2 weeks I use dumbells, then the 3rd week I use the bar (free weight). 4th & 5 week dumbells, then I use the smith on the 6th. Repeat.

I rotate, 1 week smith machine, 1 week dumbells, both are seated lifts.

Standing press is bad for your back in my experence. I would stick to seated military press in front and behind the back. I would also incorporate the Arnold Press, which is a dumbell press with a twist at the bottom preformed while seated.
