Dead lifts are great for traps.. so are power cleans, upright rows and heavy shrugs.

as far as shrugs go - try making sure you look downwards and hold at the top for a second...changing this really helped me out...
and mix it up...do a variety of exercises.

When you work your sholders do dumbell and barbell presses especially behind the neck. That works them along with your shoulders. It will help thicken them up.

Anything done behind the neck can be an injury waiting to happen.
My vote goes to deadlifts. What? This isnt a pole? I dont care, I'm voting anyway.

neck machine, If you don't have one of them do manual resistance with your partner, if no partner use a band. Form is vital, look down, do dumbells and barbell. Hold the contraction at the top.
Whatcha gonna do......

in order to work your traps properly you ahve to shrug your shoulders slightly back on an angle, shruging straight up and down is holding back your trap development ! also do shrugs with your chin on your chest this allows for a greater range of motion! if you want to know what the correct movement is to work a muscle correctly you have to look at the direction of the striations! you have to go with the grain!
