saliva test vs blood test?

I've seen some saliva test online and was wondering if anyone on here has gone that route. I have used blood tests in the past but the closet lab is a 2 hr drive so sending my saliva in the mail seems more convenient.

Saliva test can only give you free hormone numbers, not total.

So I was reading about the difference between free and total hormone levels and I'm still a bit confused but as I understand it free is the active amount that is currently being used by the body and total is both free and the non-active form...so is free more important to measure considering its active??
