sometimes that happens , do you have a pc you can see whats on the disk? like the autorun file .
    try cleaning the disk.
try a different bootable cd is you have one. (might be an old cd-rom)
use a win95, 98, etc boot floppy cd cd the the cd drive and start the setup manualy.

You need to reburn that CD and make it bootable using these instructions:

    good luck.

what is the bios set to ??

do other bootable disks boot off of the machine?

if they do and the xp disk still does not .. it is possible there is no boot info on the disk to begin with... something like a running upgrade cd that can be run from a pc already running windows without a bootable drive or ability to change the bios to do so.

I set the bios to boot from the CD first but it just skips it. I think it has something to do with it being burned...

Why are you trying to boot up with the XP Professional? If you're trying to boot the program without loading it first (that's kinda what it sounds like), I don't think it will work. What OS is the computer running now?

That is what you do to format a hard drive and do a clean install of the os... boot it from the cd. In the old days you used to have to make a boot disk (floppy) but now-a-days, computers can boot directly from the cd.

Have fun without any of your games working,
learning how to configure and adminster a secure linux box,
trying to get all of your hardware working,
    getting X windows working properly,
learning an entirely new windowing interface,
trying how to figure out how to copy a file to a floppy,
trying to mount a cd-rom with cryptic commands.

The guy is having trouble making a bootable cd-rom. I don't think he needs the additional hassle of learning a new operating system.

You don't have to boot it from the disk to have it format the hard drive. If you have a new hard drive, it should have come with a disk that allows you to install the OS, and if you already have an OS (especially an earlier version of Windows) all you have to do is run the disk and it does the rest. XP asks you if you want to keep the old OS or delete it, if you want to reformat the disk (if you're using an old Windows FAT 32 system). I've installed Windows on new hard drives and I've installed Windows XP Proffesional over Windows ME and a few computers with Windows XP Home. I've never booted off of the CD Rom itself.
