Are firearm silencers really that quiet?

Was wondering if anyone has heard a suppresed firearm fire? I have always been fascinated with silencers forever. Especially the one for the PPK, mp5s and jack bauers sig in 24! I know they are illegal but man i would love to have one

Only heard em in the movies. Wondered the same thing.
Wondering if that plastic soda carton works if taped up to the barrel. One time use but Im sure you only need to shoot once.

speaking of which i have tried that plastic soda thing. taped it to the barell of my .22 beretta. it really worked sounded like a car door being slammed. Only problem is good for one shot.

It depends on what weapon the silencer is attached to.
Something with a small calibre like a .22 or a .32 it will cut the noise down to a large degree, not as quiet as in the movies but fairly quiet. Like the soda ca the lose their effectiveness over time but they do work for a while. For larger caibres like .38, .357 Magnum, .45 etc they dont really cut down that much. The kind of work that requires a silencer is usually suited to the smaller calibres due to the higher rate of accuracy obtainable with smaller calibres. As an example most mafia hits are .22.

Silencers are more popular in movie than real life. They look cool though.

The HK23 w/ silencer sounds like a car door shutting when it fires. Pretty cool.

yup the mark 23 is an awesome gun. kinda big tho, i think special forces dropped the socom version due to its larger size.

Silencers are also not as small as the movies would have you believe, i have shot a Mac 11 with a silencer and it was a mild pop sound.

Only in certain states are they illegal. Most states so long as you have a permit you can. http://www.atf.gov/

they aren't illegal anymore since that ban expired. You have to pay a $200 tax stamp on it, but they are legal now.

Nope sorry dont think so. You couldnt have one before the assault weapons ban without a permit. The only exception is if it was granfathered in. It would have to be from around the 1950's. Also there are state laws that ban silencers. California for instance.

Im a CCW instructor certified & licensed by the NRA and DPS. I would love to be wrong on this one though.

I also shot the MP5SD, the 9mm version. I agree, all you could hear was the bolt clacking. Pretty bad ass. Fun as hell.
