I've been using Linux for 4-5 years now and the concept of paying money for software is ludicrous to me... Oh, the all the free Linux software is actually good and fully functional. Not like that half functioning "shareware" crap on Windows that is chalk full of spyware/adware.
Another thing that upsets me about Windows is that when software has a bug, you can't do jack about it short of praying to God that it gets fixed in the next release (which, I might add, you will have to pay for) which is scheduled for next year. The life/development cycle of Linux software is extremely fast. You report a bug, the author of the software usually personally corresponds with you about it, he fixes the bug, then releases the bugfixed version of the software immediately. There is no way in hell you are going to get in contact with a developer of Windows or Photoshop or something like that.
There are many other reasons, but those are the main ones for me: paying for software, dealing with adware/spyware/viruses, and slow/non-existant interaction with developers to resolve bugs.

Basically what you will be doing is jacking away at windows and changing it from the inside out. This is the way i have done it, it still keeps performance and looks good in my opinion.
There is another simpler way to do this though. There is numerous programs around that will bascially apply its own GUI over Windows, so it will look different, if you go to www.wincustomize.com they have some stuff on there.

I wish MS would incorporate multiple desktop capability into Windows ala KDE/GNOME.... it's a great feature for people like me that have a ton of windows open and just one monitor.
