USA - SAWYER COUNTY, Wis - The first weekend of gun deer hunting in the state starts off on a deadly note as five people are killed and three others injured by another hunter.
It happened on the Rusk and Sawyer County line in the town of Meteor near Birchwood and Rice Lake.
Police say it started shortly after a hunting party saw another hunter in their tree stand.
Sawyer County Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle says one of the shooting victims radioed back to the deer shack for help.
When more hunters got there, they were also shot.
Police say the gunman then disappeared into the woods.
Helicopters were flying over the area looking for him but he came out of the woods on his own with an empty gun.
He was arrested and is in custody.
His name is not being released but we do know he is from the Twin Cities area.
The victims' names have not been released at this time.
Again, five people were killed, one person is in critical condition, the second is in serious condition, and the third person is in fair condition.
