It's not really the mirror that makes one look bad, but the lighting of the room...
Ever notice public washroom mirrors make you look bad, gaunt, pale? Notice they often have fluorescent lighting of the cheapest kind in there (which is a cold light at the green end of the spectrum).
"Make up" mirrors usually have incadescent lights around them as they case a warmer more orange light, which makes you look "healthier"...
I'm sure some bro here who is into photography could explain this better than me, but the lighting is really what makes you look good or bad in a mirror (well, thats unless you're an ugly f'er! then only darkness makes ya look good!)

Now hang on there. It's also some gym mirrors have like a sag in them. Almost fun-housie, if you will. Me and my buds at the gym noticed this too. From a distance we look all swole walking up to the machines or water cooler. Then you get right up in front of the thing and you look all small. Plays with your mind, especially when your trying to get a good pump going.
Feel the pump coming on and you look up, nothing. Finish the set and go for some water, and all of the sudden, your hoooge.

63190 - The mirrors at my gym have the same effect. What's up with that?
